The concept of density is a key aspect of Westchester 2025 since it determines the point at which certain county-provided facilities, such as sanitary sewer trunk lines, are needed, or services, such as public bus transportation, can be supported. The highest levels of density should relate beneficially to the county’s centers or to corridors suitable for enhancement as mixed-use areas.
Density may be expressed as a ratio of existing population concentration, residential units, or floor area, to a unit of land area, usually an acre. The 1995 Patterns for Westchester density map provided recommended density ranges for the entire county. However, in many instances the density ranges selected were too broad to be effective.
Westchester 2025 will include a refined and updated county-wide density map that will serve as a meaningful tool for local and regional planning.
